Compare like with like
Find out whether a quoted amount is monthly gross salary, annual salary or total cost to company. Ask which contributions and benefits are included and which are additional.
Do not equate a package figure with money arriving in your bank account. Deductions depend on your circumstances. Ask for a breakdown and consult an appropriate tax professional when you need personal advice.
Use benchmarks as context, not a verdict
Regional salary reports from several independent publishers can help frame questions, but sample, year, experience level and role definitions matter. A survey median is not a guaranteed offer or a price for every developer.
Compare any benchmark’s scope with your location, responsibilities and employment arrangement before using a figure. This guide deliberately avoids fixed salary bands that may become outdated.
Know your own decision range
Write down the minimum package you would reasonably consider, a target, and the trade-offs that could change your decision. Keep the minimum private if that suits your negotiation.
Factor in commuting, remote equipment, leave, benefits, variable pay and responsibilities. For contractor work, consider unpaid time and business costs as well. A higher headline amount can still be a worse overall fit.
Make a specific, grounded request
Connect your request to the role’s scope and relevant evidence of your contribution. Ask about the employer’s budgeted range when it has not been shared. Avoid inventing another offer or promising outcomes you cannot control.
If base pay is fixed, discuss other meaningful terms: leave, flexibility, start date, equipment or a clearly defined review. A future review is not the same as a guaranteed increase; get its terms understood.
Illustrative wording: “Based on the scope we discussed and my experience owning similar integrations, I’m targeting a package in the range we outlined. Is there flexibility in the base amount, and could you share the full benefits breakdown?”
Close with written clarity
Before accepting, check the final compensation breakdown, payment frequency and any conditions on bonuses or benefits. If something was promised verbally, ask for confirmation in the offer.
Take time to understand the terms rather than accepting because a conversation felt positive. For uncertain contract or tax implications, seek qualified advice. This is general career guidance, not legal or financial advice.
