THE SHORT VERSION

Share enough to demonstrate your abilities, but not confidential information. Anonymous profiles reduce exposure; they cannot promise zero identification risk.

Decide what you want to explore

You can investigate whether a different role suits you without committing to leave immediately. Start with your preferred work, location, compensation expectations and timing.

Keep your search organised using personal accounts and devices where appropriate. Respect your employer’s policies and commitments. Do not use confidential contact lists or company systems to run a private search.

Audit your identifying details

A name is not the only way a person can be identified. A rare project, exact employer history or combination of location and specialist skills may make a profile recognisable.

Review anything you publish or send and choose the level of detail you are comfortable with. Avoid exact client names, internal architecture diagrams, proprietary code and customer data unless you have permission to share them.

Describe private work safely

Use a high-level case study: the problem category, your responsibility, the constraints and the result you can truthfully discuss. Replace sensitive specifics with general descriptions rather than inventing a different project.

If an interviewer requests restricted information, explain the boundary and offer a hypothetical discussion or public example. Protecting confidential work can itself demonstrate professional judgement.

Illustrative description: “I owned an integration between a payments service and an internal reconciliation workflow, including retries, monitoring and support documentation.” No client names or private implementation details are necessary.

Understand what anonymity can and cannot do

Fliq uses anonymous candidate profiles until a mutual match unlocks identity details. That changes the initial conversation, but it does not make every detail impossible to recognise.

Review your bio and other information before sharing. Once you exchange personal details with a matched company, that company has received them. No privacy setting can make someone forget information already disclosed.

Control the pace of the conversation

State realistic availability and notice expectations. You do not need to commit to interviews that conflict with current obligations or share references before you understand the process.

Ask how a prospective employer handles candidate information and when references would be contacted. Request that current-employer references not be contacted without your explicit agreement. For contractual questions, consult a qualified professional.

Your next steps

  • Review identifying details beyond your name.
  • Remove confidential project information.
  • Set realistic timing and work preferences.
  • Agree on reference-contact boundaries.
